What Size Stable Should I Have for My Horse?
As a rule of thumb, stable sizes should always allow your horse to move around freely, lie down comfortably, and stand without risk of injury. Here’s a quick overview of recommended minimum sizes for horse stables:
- Ponies (under 14.2hh): 3m x 3.6m (10ft x 12ft)
- Horses (14.2hh to 16.2hh): 3.6m x 3.6m (12ft x 12ft)
- Larger horses (over 16.2hh): 3.6m x 4.2m or larger (12ft x 14ft+)
- Foaling stables: At least 3.6m x 4.2m (12ft x 14ft), to allow space for mare and foal
These are minimums – more space is always better, particularly for horses who spend longer periods inside.
Internal Stables: Maximise Comfort Indoors
Internal stables are an excellent choice for barns or American Barns. As with external stables, each box should allow the horse to turn, lie down, and rest in comfort. Our internal stables start at 3m x 3.6m (10ft x 12ft).
It’s worth considering:
- Ventilation: Larger stalls help air flow, especially in buildings with multiple horses.
- Access: Wide doors and aisles make cleaning and handling much easier.
- Bedding depth: Deeper beds may require higher kickboards and sturdy partitions.
At Prime Stables, we can customise internal stables to any size or layout, tailoring the fit to your horses and your space.

Static and Mobile Field Shelters
If you’re using static or mobile field shelters, it’s still important to provide sufficient room for rest and protection.
- Single horse shelter: A minimum of 3.6m x 3.6m (12ft x 12ft).
- Multiple horses: Add 3.6m (12ft) per horse to reduce the risk of bullying and allow all horses to shelter comfortably.
We always recommend dividing larger shelters if you have horses with different temperaments. Our mobile field shelters are available in a range of sizes and configurations, plus they require no planning permission, making them a great, flexible stabling solution.

Foaling Stables: Making Space for New Life
Mares need space and safety during foaling, and new born foals benefit from freedom to move early on. Foaling box sizes should start at 3.6m x 4.2m (12ft x 14ft).
All of our foaling stables include top-quality craftsmanship, safe fixtures and wood treatment, and thoughtful design to protect both mare and foal during this important time.

Why Stable Size Matters
A horse’s physical health, mental wellbeing, and behaviour are all closely linked to their environment. Stables that are too small can contribute to:
- Stress or anxiety (leading to behaviours like box-walking or stable weaving)
- Injuries from being unable to move naturally
- Respiratory issues due to poor airflow
Larger, well-ventilated stables support a calm, contented horse, and make day-to-day care easier for you. Our clients often tell us how much happier and healthier their horses are in spacious, well-designed shelters.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All
Every horse is unique, and so is every property. Whether you have one beloved pony or a field full of eventers, the right building depends on:
- The number of horses you’re housing
- The size and temperament of each horse
- Your available space and layout
- Whether your horses will be stabled full-time or part-time
- Your plans for storage, foaling, or tack space
At Prime Stables, we specialise in bespoke timber equestrian buildings. Our in-house design team can help you plan a layout that fits your space and your horses perfectly.
